Richard Bellamy

 

 Richard Bellamy is Professor of Political Science at University College London (UCL), University of London, a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) and a Visiting Professor in Ethics and Public Policy at the Hertie School. His publications range from historical studies of Italian political thought post 1700, for which he was awarded the Serena Medal by the British Academy, and of European liberalism 1830-1950, through work on compromise and political ethics, to a republican account of citizenship, democracy and constitutionalism, which he has applied to both the UK and the EU. The author of 11 monographs and over 150 articles, his publications include Liberalism and Pluralism: Towards a Politics of Compromise (Routledge, 1999), Political Constitutionalism: A Republican Defence of the Constitutionality of Democracy (Cambridge University Press, 2007), which won the David and Elaine Spitz Prize in 2009, Citizenship: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2011) and Croce, Gramsci, Bobbio and the Italian Political Tradition (ECPR Press, 2014). His most recent books are A Republic of European States: Cosmopolitanism, Intergovernmentalism and Democracy in the EU, (Cambridge University Press, 2019) and (with Dario Castiglione), From Maastricht to Brexit: Democracy, Constitutionalism and Citizenship in the EU, (ECPR Press/Rowman and Littlefield, 2019).
