The PhD Colloquium is a bi-weekly seminar and includes six lectures per semester. The course spans the fall and the spring term. After the course, students should have finalized their dissertation prospectus and prepared the first paper/chapter of their dissertation for conference presentation. In addition, we will address many aspects that are relevant for the organization of a PhD project. We will discuss the difficulty of generating testable research questions and hypotheses, identifying research gaps, and selecting the right research design. We also address the planning of an academic career, including the selection of the “right” publication outlets, conference presentations, employment options inside and outside of academia, post-graduate funding options, etc.
